This was Week One (Part Two)... I Don't Want to See Kids for the Rest of the Weekend!

Monday the 20th marked the first day of work for me. From a brand-new program with 3- and 4-year-olds, I didn’t know what to expect, but with all scenarios considered, I am astonished at how well it went. And so, fast-forwarding to Friday, I didn’t just survive the week, but I conquered it!

I do have a secret, though. Not only do I have a new job at the preschool, but I resumed volunteering at the elementary school being an assistant to a third-grade teacher. So I’m actually working two jobs. Then on Friday, I agreed to a babysitting gig for a neighbor friend. So really, I worked three jobs.

Even with the two toilet accidents at the preschool, that’s not reason enough to have ruined my day. It was the clingy 18-month-old I babysat later that night. Having known the kid since he was born, I expected this behavior from him. Nonetheless, does this fact makes the job any easier.

After trying to put him to bed for two hours, I’m back home and completely drained. To make matters worse, my best friend cancelled our Saturday- the only day of the week we get to see each other.  The reason why I had taken the babysitting gig was so I had cash to hang out with her. So I’m mad at her, basically for that reason, although I’m skipping the details to save for time and ranting.

So with the toilet accidents and the crying infant, all concluded to my proclamation, “I don’t want to see kids for the rest of the weekend!”.

However, I forgot about this when I decided to go with my mom for a last-minute babysitting gig half-an-hour away, until I stepped into the family’s house. “Oh yeah, I remember now. I don’t want to see kids for the rest of the weekend…” What jogged my memory of this was the crying 2-year-old in the hall. My patience did not lie there.

Surprisingly, what seemed like an emotionally tiring night, it actually was a very easy-going night. I ended up watching the energetic and imaginative 5-year-old boy, who I  crashed the Avengers’ lego cars repeatedly with. That’s what I had the patience for.

Interestingly, my mom had told me that she preferred taking care of the two-year-old girl. “Taking care of her was easy! I’m not sure I could handle him, though,” she had said. Funny, since I thought the reverse.

This was week one… And with a childless Sunday, I think I can make it through another week with kids.

This was Week One (Part One)... Goodbye Summer, Hello Tumblr

Summer has been cut short for me this year, as it had done so last year. So now I’m crawling out of the Tumblr cave and resume posting regularly again. It sounds contradictory, doesn’t it? I’m busy now, so I’m going to writing blog posts? Well, here’s how it goes:

The last week of June was finals week for me. After five years of college, this was going to be my last quarter at this school. Unless I decide to take a class just for my own interest, but I am definitely won’t be taking any classes during the fall. Actually, I had gotten hired as an assistant teacher at a new preschool program. Since I decided to take a year or so off from school, I wanted to focus on working.

Since most grade schools end mid-June and start at the end of August (and it seems to me it starts earlier each and every year), and my college’s academic year end on the last week of June and start at the end of September, I lose a month’s worth of vacation since I go to work. This would be evidence that my summers are cut short.

Last year, I only had one week worth of a break because I took a student teaching course over the summer. This would also be evidence to why I had been so burnt out, going to school full-time and working for free part (though nearly full)- time. I wouldn’t be exaggerating very much at all if I said that I literally had no personal time.

So going back to the end of June, after I finished my last final, I thought about how I would start up writing again. Specifically, updating all of my stories on Fanfiction (yes, I am a nerd. I won’t deny it). But then, rather than being productive for personal projects, my brain went on vacation.

I have been trying to get myself to write at least 80 words a day (based on a challenge thatukulelechic created in 2009, where you write at least 80 words a day for 80 days), but over the course of the summer, posts and updates were no where near where I had wanted it to be.

I’m hoping that, now that I am in a new routine, I can get myself to schedule in writing time. So here is the first of a weekly series of posts- “This was Week #…”. I’m saying goodbye to summer early, I’m saying hello to Tumblr!

One teacher's approach to preventing gender bullying in a classroom

togetherforjacksoncountykids:

“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel

Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said: “Allie, I’m not playing. It’s time for art. The rule is no hoods or hats in school.”

She looked up with tears in her eyes and I realized there was something wrong. Her classmates went into the art room and we moved to the art storage area so her classmates wouldn’t hear our conversation. I softened my tone and asked her if she’d like to tell me what was wrong.

“My ponytail,” she cried.

“Can I see?” I asked.

She nodded and pulled down her hood. Allie’s braids had come undone overnight and there hadn’t been time to redo them in the morning, so they had to be put back in a ponytail. It was high up on the back of her head like those of many girls in our class, but I could see that to Allie it just felt wrong. With Allie’s permission, I took the elastic out and re-braided her hair so it could hang down.

“How’s that?” I asked.

She smiled. “Good,” she said and skipped off to join her friends in art.
